Learning to Choose Your Battles: Passionately Failing Towards Greatness

In life, we will all face challenges. Some of these challenges will be big and some will be small. But no matter the size of the challenge, we always have a choice: we can either fight it, or we can walk away. Learning to choose your battles is an important life skill that can help you avoid unnecessary conflicts and stress. It involves being able to identify which issues are worth fighting for and which ones are not. This skill can be particularly useful in personal relationships, at work, and in social situations. As I have begun to push and encourage myself further into the unknow the more this has become important to me so this week I pondered on this, and this is what this week's blog is about.

In order to learn to choose your battles, it is important to develop good communication skills. This means being able to express your thoughts and feelings clearly and effectively, while also being able to listen to others and understand their perspectives. It also means being able to recognize when a situation is not worth fighting over and being able to let it go. With practice and patience, anyone can learn to choose their battles wisely and live a more peaceful, fulfilling life.

So how do you learn to choose your battles? Here are a few tips:

  1. Identify the battles that are worth fighting. Not all battles are created equal. Some battles are worth fighting, while others are not. Ask yourself these questions to help you decide which battles are worth fighting:

    • Is this battle important to me?

    • Will fighting this battle help me achieve my goals?

    • Is fighting this battle worth the time, energy, and stress?

  2. Learn to let go of the battles that are not worth fighting. Sometimes, it's better to walk away from a battle than to fight it. If a battle is not worth fighting, it's important to learn to let it go. This can be difficult, but it's important to remember that you can't win every battle.

  3. Focus on the battles that you can win. Once you've identified the battles that are worth fighting, it's important to focus on the battles that you can win. This means setting realistic goals and expectations. It also means being prepared to compromise.

  4. Don't be afraid to ask for help. If you're struggling to choose your battles, don't be afraid to ask for help. Talk to a friend, family member, or therapist. They can help you to identify the battles that are worth fighting and to develop strategies for dealing with them.

Learning to choose your battles is a lifelong journey. There will be times when you make mistakes. But if you keep practicing, you will eventually learn to identify the battles that are worth fighting and to let go of the battles that are not.

Here are some additional tips for learning to choose your battles:

  • Be mindful of your emotions. When you're feeling angry, frustrated, or stressed, it's more likely that you'll make impulsive decisions that you'll later regret. Take some time to calm down before you make any important decisions.

  • Consider the consequences. Before you fight a battle, think about the potential consequences. Will it damage your relationships? Will it cost you time or money? Will it make you feel stressed or anxious? If the consequences are not worth it, it's probably best to walk away.

  • Be realistic about your expectations. It's important to remember that you can't win every battle. If you're setting yourself up for failure, you're more likely to get discouraged and give up. Instead, focus on setting realistic goals and expectations.

  • Be flexible. Sometimes, the best way to win a battle is to change your approach. If your initial strategy isn't working, be willing to try something different.

Learning to choose your battles is a skill that takes time and practice. But if you keep at it, you'll eventually learn to navigate life's challenges with ease. I wanted to finish off my blog this week with a talk from President Russell M Nelson that I have been listening to over and over about become a peacemaker. This has become one of my top priorities.
